Children working as ‘Mini –Project Leaders’ for the
'Sensation Activation' project
As the children are taking the lead and ownership of the whole project they have become the mini-leaders for the outdoor sensory developments. So far they have been developing as Scientists, Technologists, Engineers and Mathematicians through a number of STEM days. Their work has included:
- exploring and investigating the durability of materials to replace the impractical stones to develop sensory pathways in the Sensory Square
- collecting data about their favourite materials
- measuring pathways and calculating the costs for materials needed for the pathways
- designing where the materials should go in the Sensory pathways
- designing and making scale models of a new unique story chair
- investigating shade and shadows
- investigating simple optics of materials in order to decide which material to make our new shaded area from
- exploring using their senses and designing the new sensory walls for the outdoor classroom
- voting for a new name for their sensory, shaded outdoor classroom
As a result of all the children’s hard work we have managed to replace the pathways in the Sensory Square with their new chosen sensory pathways, buy a shaded outdoor classroom which our children and their families have transform into a sensory haven and have had our very own unique story chair made and installed.
